" Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee: and before thou camest forth out of the womb I Sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto all nations." Jeremiah 1:5
These words were spoken of the prophet Jeremiah, but it seems that these
words were destined for Bishop W. K. Gordon, Sr. For he is truly a leader
born of God. He
was converted in the Methodist Church, and later became a member of
the Church of God: be we thank God that in the year 1925, he visited
the Church of God in Christ where the Lord saved, sanctified and baptized
him with the Holy Ghost and fire and anointed him to preach the gospel. Many
souls have been saved under his auspices. Bishop Gordon lives by the
words "Look not on the things of your own but on things of others."
He established a dormitory for the young men attending Southern University
and purchased properties for the aged and widowed saints without charge
to them. During
the tenure of his ministry, he has served as local Sunday School Superintendent
at Gordon Chapel # 1, District and State Sunday School Superintendent,
State Treasurer and District Superintendent of Baton Rouge #4. Because
of his faithfulness as a leader and his obedience as a saint, the Lord
approved his appointment as Presiding Bishop of the Eastern Jurisdiction
of Louisiana. During his tenure the Lord truly blessed this state to
grow by leaps and bounds. Bishop Gordon paid off the indebtness of the
state in eight years. He remodeled the State Temple two times. Because
of his loyalty during his administration, The Eastern Jurisdiction of
Louisiana always responded to the calls of the National Headquarter
with complete reports. Because
of his desire to see the Lord in peace and to allow others to get right
with God, he decided to resign as Bishop so that the state could resume
its rightful title as the "peaceable state." It is said that one becomes a legend after death: likewise their achievements becomes a legacy. We thank God that this man, Bishop W. K. Gordon, Sr. has become a legend and his works a legacy while he lives.
